Designing from Game Concepts

Yo Louis here (I use the handle “NKBDL” on online games). This is a series of developer blogs, where we log our journey of making good games. It also serves as a weekly progress update to those who are interested in what we do, and how we come about doing it. We began our journey in 2008 and we are still a long way to our goal.

Recently, we have started preparing for this latest game, started thinking about it since the beginning of 2017. We started thinking about it when the latest addiction by us – Clash Royale – The Most Ridiculous Duel made us feel we can do something alike, yet at this very moment, that idea became another game but with some elements taken from it. Talking about liking something, and then improving on it with your own vision!

Example of Game Concept Development

We thought about making it almost identical as Clash Royale, except some of the game mechanics like having obstacles and special cards placed in the middle areas. However one day as a friend came by, she asked us is this Clash Royale (she also plays the game)? We knew then we are doing it wrong. It is okay to make reference to you favorite game, but it is not okay when everything is almost identical. As in one of the recent post on “10 Things Every Indie Game Developer Should Know“, point 5, you should be making your game unique, but familiar! But not that familiar right? Thus, our concept went from the original, to now the same two sides, yet we fight monsters in the middle.

Will share more later.
